Day Two

Here’s Day Two’s outfit:

Granted that after a while this was decidedly not my best move ever as far as outfits go, but I’m no longer concerned about finding enough variety in what I wear…if all else fails, I’ll just find seven core outfits and repeat them all over and over again haha

Things that Happened Day Two:

  • A completely unrelated point:  UK WON ITS 8TH CHAMPIONSHIP!  I waited to see people run the flame, but I missed it every time…disappointing, I know.  But here’s a picture from the riots in Lexington last night!

  • Lots of people (all my friends) made fun of me and told me that if I was REALLY dedicated, I wouldn’t wash my dress because victims of human trafficking don’t get to wash theirs…which isn’t necessarily true, but anyway, I explained to them that I’m going to limit myself to one protest at a time.  Maybe one day I’ll give up showering for a month or something, but that is not going to be this month 🙂
  • I realized that the top of my dress is already stretching out (Hey mom, we might have to make some alterations this weekend when I’m home..please and thank you in advance!)
  • I’m realizing that this protest can’t be something I’m doing for me or I’m going to respond the wrong way to those who criticize me.  Yesterday (Day two..sorry, I’m writing a day late!) I didn’t respond well the third time one of my best friends criticized me and I just kind of snapped.  Human Trafficking is a cause that I feel convicted to fight against, but I need to keep this in mind when dealing with other people and their responses to my pledge to do this so that I’m able to love them well and convey the point of the One Dress Protest in a way that glorifies God.

At this point, that’s all I can remember from yesterday, but there’s already plenty of material for Day 3 that I’m leaving out, so stay tuned!

Nehemiah’s Words

I stole this from the One Dress for One Month Facebook page

“Hey y’all! I was reading Nehemiah 4 tonight and the Lord showed me something awesome that I knew He wanted me to share.
In this chapter the Jews were rebuilding the wall of Jerusalem. As they were rebuilding it a man named Sanballet began his fight against them, he said…

“What does this bunch of poor, feeble Jews think they’re doing? So they think they can build the wall in a single day by just offering a few sacrifices? Do they actually this they can make something of stones from a rubbish heap- and charred ones at that?” (Neh. 4:2)

Nehemiah responds by praying…
“Hear us, our God, for we are being mocked.” (Neh. 4:4)
So Sanballet told his troops to prepare to fight against them saying…
“Before they know what’s happening, we will swoop down on them and kill them and end their work.” (Neh. 4:11)

Then Nehemiah said…
“Don’t be afraid of the enemy! Remember the Lord, who is great and glorious, and fight for your brothers, your sons, your daughters, your wives and your homes!” (Neh. 4:14)
He continued to explain to his people…
“The work is very spread our, and we are widely separated from each other along the wall. When you hear the blast of the trumpet, rush to wherever it is sounding. Then OUR GOD WILL FIGHT FOR US.” (Neh. 4:19-20)

Then this is the part that gave me goosebumps! Nehemiah says to the Jews…
“During this times, NONE OF US- not I, nor my relatives, nor my servants, nor the guards who were with me – EVER TOOK OFF OUR CLOTHES.” (Neh. 4:23)
They never took off their clothes while they were waiting for Victory over those who doubted them and fought against them. Tomorrow starts the day we will not remove our clothes in representation of those who can not remove themselves from their lifestyle. I wholeheartedly believe that though we might not physically see chains broken, lives renewed and hearts turned to Christ, I believe this month more names will be written in the Lambs Book of Life and there will be added numbers to the army of Christ. HALLELUJAH! So excited for all the Lord has in store. “

from a participant named Hayley Owens.  So beautiful and so true!

Day One

Okay, first of all, here was day one of the dress!Image

Things that happened day 1:

  • Shut my dress in the door of my car…it proceeded to rain for the next two hours that the edge of my dress was stuck in my door.  I eventually noticed and pulled it in.  It was wet for the next like hour.  Good story though, eh?
  • One of my friends (A Boy) said, “Is that the dress?”  When I replied yes, he said, “Wow. Bold”…it’s a solid black dress…I don’t understand how this is a stretch haha
  • I got to explain the protest probably three times today!
  • I know of at least four girls at Centre that are doing the protest in some form or another with me this month!  Yah Yah!

I can’t promise that there will be posts every day because I go to Centre and School is hard haha, but I’ll do my best to keep you all filled in!

One Dress, One Month: Day One!

Hi friends!  You asked for it, so here’s my blog chronicling my adventures in wearing one dress every day for a month!  Today’s Day 1, but I’d rather not write about it or post any pictures until I know what I’m going to say about it/until my camera’s charged.

Anyway, here’s a bit of background information on the Dress Project for those of you who are curious!

Thanks to my friends in Appalacian State’s Chapter of The Hundred Movement, I’m planning on participating in the One Dress, One Month protest.

When Amy Seiffert, a woman living in Bowling Green, KY (that’s right, Centre Students…not too far away from us!) learned that her hometown of Toledo, Ohio, ranked 4th in the United States in the number of arrests, investigations and rescues of underage victims of sex trafficking, she decided that rather than stand by and accept it, she would do something about it.

Amy, having heard of The Uniform Project, decided to make her own dress (with the help of her mom, I believe) and wear that dress for six months.  She allowed herself to add on different accessories and dress up/down the dress in any way she wanted…and she got really creative…but remarkably, she did it!

What did she do this for?  Wearing the same dress every day was bound to raise some eyebrows…and it did (She was even featured on CNN!).  When asked, she was able to tell people about the plight of sex trafficking victims—it also allowed Amy to raise awareness and accept donations for a house for trafficked girls in Ohio called The Daughter Project.

So, since April is Sex-Trafficking Awareness Month, the girls from App State are doing this, and I’m doing it with them, allll the way from Kentucky :)

The idea here is that A:  Rather than spending money on clothes, you use any money you would have spent and donate it to help victims of human or sex-trafficking, B:  You get to raise awareness regardless of whether or not you raise any money, and C:  You don’t have to be concerned with what you look like or what you’re wearing so much…The Bible says that humans look at the shallow parts of us, but God looks at the heart.
